World Of Warcraft Classic's Release Caused A 223% Rise In Subscriptions

Two years after the announcement of World of Warcraft Classic, this oft-requested server option is now available and transporting many players back to 2004. While some fans may have been skeptical that players would show up en masse for the vanilla WoW experience, WoW Classic certainly appears to be a hit, and some newly available data offers further evidence that players really were longing to return to the original Azeroth.

Specifically, SuperData indicates that World of Warcraft subscriptions increased approximately 223 percent from July to August. While it is stated that the current WoW player count is below what it was when Battle for Azeroth, the game's seventh expansion, released last August, this increase certainly suggests that there are a great number of players interested in WoW Classic.

In its first full week after launching on August 26, World of Warcraft Classic drove online viewership on Twitch—a popular Amazon-owned live streaming platform—to new heights. In a single week after WoW Classic’s release, the game generated 47.1 million hours of game viewing time—far more than any other game has produced in a single week. Prior to that week, there had been just five occasions in which a game had generated more than 30 million hours watched. Two of those, of course, were Fortnite and Apex Legends.

World of Warcraft Classic will roll out updates to the game at a slow pace, giving hardcore grinders enough time to finish raids like Blackrock Depths before adding challenges. A lot of content fans have been clamoring for is still not added, like gaining rewards for killing enemy players. Still, with Classic's first month into the wild going so strong, the sky's the limit with regard to what might come next.
