World Giraffe Day!

Happy World Giraffe Day! World Giraffe Day is an event held to celebrate the longest-necked animal annually on the summer solstice, the longest day or night of the year, depending on which side of the hemisphere you reside. This worldwide day, not only brings awareness to these overlooked animals but aims to raise money to protect these beautiful creatures out in the wild. There are only approximately 111,000 giraffes left in the world across all the different types of giraffe breed.

If you are curious about these majestic animals then let's learn some unique facts about them together. Let's start with their bodies, the average giraffe height is between fifteen and twenty feet tall. Baby giraffes are born standing six feet tall and are able to run around with the other giraffes in just a few hours. Female giraffes weight between 1,600 and 2,600 pounds, while males weigh between 2,400 and 3,000 pounds. On average, baby giraffes weigh a whopping 150 pounds when they are born, making them one of the heaviest animals to be born on earth. One thing many people wonder about in giraffes, is how do they communicate, do they make noises or is it all intuition?

Giraffes do actually make noises to communicate with one another. Due to their long necks, noises are a bit of a struggle for these towering animals. What their bodies do, is create humming sounds by being able to vibrate their vocal cords at high frequencies. These frequencies are so high pitched, that the human ear often cannot hear such sounds, leading us to believe that giraffes are mute animals. For the most part, though, giraffes keep to themselves and are quite graceful animals. There are just some unique facts about giraffes, there is still so much to learn about these animals. They are on the extinct animal list, so it is quite important to bring awareness to these animals, so humanity can continue to learn all they can about them, before they become a part of history.
