tenants are going to focus on things like how much the rent will cost, whether
they will like the area, and even if the apartment has the amenities that they
would like. But an apartment can check all of the boxes and still find it short
if you have a bad landlord that you have to deal with for the next year or more.
You want to make sure that you are
able to find a good landlord to ensure that you enjoy the new apartment that
you are going to call your own. Take the time to see whether the landlord is
going to be good for you by checking whether they are willing to respect your
property or not. The last thing that you want to have happen is that your
landlord just walks into the building whenever they would like, without giving
you some of the notice that you are supposed to have.
There can be a big challenge that
can happen here. The landlord is the one who typically owner the building and
has their name on the title to the home. But as the tenant, you are paying to
make that your home and you can expect some privacy to make that happen. If the
landlord is not respecting your space, then this can make things awkward.
Even though the landlord does own
the building, it is your home. They are allowed to come in to check out things
and to do some of the required maintenance, but they do need to give you some
notice that they plan to do this. Unless it is an emergency, such as a leak in
the apartment and you are not home, they usually have to give you 24 to 48
hours. The exact time will depend on where you live and some of the regulations
that are there.
