How to maintain a positive mindset in the classroom

Negativity does not help accomplish all the items on a person’s to-do list. Now, more than ever, with the way the pandemic is changing lives and forcing us to rethink what matters, it becomes more important than ever to stay positive. This isn’t just beneficial to you, though. Every day, the number of families affected by the virus grows. That means rising cases of anxiety and stress. Many of your students will be affected.

By maintaining a positive mindset, by fostering a positive mindset in your virtual classes, you can help your students overcome whatever anxiety and stress might be clouding their minds as well. You can help them concentrate on their studies better and boost their memory and higher brain functions.

Here are a few tips on how you can pull this off if you’re a teacher in the best school in Malaysia.

Manage Your Stress

First off, you’ll need to realize that the kids take their cue from you. If you’re stressed out, that’s going to come across your classes. You’ll need to learn how to manage your stress effectively. If you don’t, that’s going to impact your to engage your students. You won’t be able to focus, and neither will your students. Find ways to cut down on stress. Be more forgiving of yourself and of mistakes. Systems will get bogged down. Students won’t be able to log in. The internet will get wonky. Accept that all these things might and will happen and then move on.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

Moving on doesn’t mean that you’re dismissing what you feel. There could be no worse way to approach the situation than trying to bury all that stress and anxiety. If you’re trying to pretend that everything is all right, then sooner or later, you might end up releasing your emotions through an outburst. Acknowledge what you feel. Don’t try to deny them and teach the same to your students. If they feel frustrated, if they’re scared or angry, make sure they understand that it’s all right to feel these things. But what they can do is acknowledge that feeling. Let yourself be angry—but only for a few minutes. That’s all the time you’ll want to spend on those emotions. Let their course through your system and you’ll feel better. Only then can healing and recovery start.

Push Yourself Every Day

Having a positive mindset means that you believe in your ability to accomplish your goals. One way to keep a healthy mindset in class is to keep testing yourself. Work hard and do more than you thought possible. Whenever you surpass your limits, whenever you find yourself doing something you never thought you would, you’ll feel infinitely grateful for the opportunity and satisfied with a job well done. That creates a positive mindset, one that instills more confidence in you every day.

Choose Your Squad

Observe the people that you surround yourself with. When you talk to them, do you feel down and sad? Or are you energized? Do they motivate you to work harder, to stay positive even more? Your friends impact you much more than you realize. If the people around you complain about everything, leave you feeling defeated, and even more stressed, walk away. Find or make your own support system, one that will help you stay positive instead of dragging you down.

And by positive, we don’t mean blind positivity but rather one that is informed by what’s happening, that knows things might and will get worse. Armed by that knowledge, though, still manages to appreciate every little thing. Because it knows how bad things can get, so it celebrates every moment. Look for that kind of positivity.
