Earth’s forests are not only home to many millions of animals, but they also produce essential oxygen for all land-dwelling creatures and cool the Earth. Without the billions of trees absorbing just as many tonnes of harmful greenhouse gases and pumping life into the atmosphere, life, as it is, would be impossible. Not only would we experience a dramatic dip in fresh air, but there would also be a shortage of clean water, an increase in erosion and chemical pollution in waterways, and countless unique species would be in peril. Forests even provide us with natural medication, rain generation, and income for more than 1.6 billion people.
It’s difficult to imagine what would become of the earth without forests, although these ecosystems are facing a real and prominent threat. The good news is that there are plenty of ways we can all pitch in to make a positive change for the forests and the world at large.
Be aware of fire danger
Bushfires are common and seasonal in several parts of the world, but these natural disasters are capable of inflicting irreversible damage upon delicate ecosystems. Such a fire can kill millions of animals and desecrate billions of trees, and while these fires are commonly ignited by natural causes like lightning, they’re also often lit, whether intentionally or not, by humans. Preventing the ignition of your own accidental blaze is fairly simple as long as you keep a few basics in mind - steer clear of dry grass, dead leaves and debris, and save burn-offs for the cooler months. Even then, make sure to check council restrictions and fire danger warnings before burning off.
Choose sustainable products
More everyday products than you may realize can be traced back to a forest. On the most basic level, consider the amount of paper that exists in the average household. Then there’s furniture - some pieces in your home may have been made out of timber or resin, both of which are derived directly from trees - and even unexpected culprits like medicine, cosmetic products and detergents. Wherever possible, make a concerted effort to buy products that are produced in an environmentally-friendly way, and know that you’re contributing to the sustainability of the forests and the most at-risk creatures living amongst them.
Do your research
Information is a significant currency when it comes to creating environmentally-friendly action. The fact that forests are home to 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity and 300 million people should be enough to convince many more potential activists of the need for protective action. Share what you learn with those around you and you’ll be contributing to the growth of collective awareness and, with any luck, behavioral change.
Amongst the key principles which go unnoticed by many is the exponential value of intact forests in comparison with those which have been degraded. Not only are intact forests responsible for absorbing up to 25% of man-made carbon emissions, but intact forests also make for better habitats and host more wildlife than the degraded alternative, and so it follows that the greatest focus should be given to the forests in the best condition.
Think local and global
The thinning of forests is as global as challenges come, but it’s possible to make a difference simply by asking the right questions. On a local level, keep an eye out for opportunities to throw your support behind initiatives that limit the expansion of roads, regulate mining and logging, and lobby for indigenous land rights. Meanwhile, you can do your part to address the macro issues by rallying your community and contacting government representatives to let them know the importance you place on reforestation. If you have the means, you might also consider making a donation to foundations working towards environmental restoration.
Get your hands dirty
Planting trees outdoors is more than just an interesting pastime or a wholesome alternative to suffocating houseplants - in fact, a collection of seedlings can grow up to become the forest of the future, as long as you opt for hardy native varieties. Whether you opt for a planting event or get to work in your own backyard, one of the most important steps is selecting trees that are well-suited to your climate, remembering that there are tree varieties well-suited to harsh conditions. In doing so, you’ll minimize maintenance requirements for healthy growth.
The value of healthy forests cannot be overstated or underestimated, and there has never been a better time to make your contribution towards a healthy future for the planet. Tips like these make it simple to do your part in protecting the planet, and there are more being conceived of all the time, so there’s no reason not to become involved.
