Don't Advertise, Improvise! #2

Yesterday, we embarked on a journey to understand how we can improve our memorization skills when speaking in front of others. We learned the first rule of stagecraft is, “Never let them see you sweat”, hence our title, ‘Don’t Advertise, Improvise.’ Today I’ll begin to break that down.

Once your speech or presentation is created, the 1st key is:

Read it repeatedly.

We read as we create. But creating and casual reading are two different modes. Read it first silently then aloud. This not only facilitates memorization, but adds a second sense, hearing, into the process. Hearing our speech begins ‘aural pattern recognition.’ Aural pattern recognition is like muscle memory for our ears.

Reading out loud is different from reading silently. When we read silently, we can become distracted with other things that pop into our minds. When we read aloud, we can be more focused on our topic. But don’t eschew reading silently. Doing both uses more of your brain than just doing one. In this case, less is definitely not more.

See you tomorrow…
