A Sex Coach is Not What You Think!

You may have heard the term sex coach but not be entirely sure what it means. Sometimes people confuse sex coaches with sex surrogates... people who provide physical contact to help clients overcome sexual trauma.

In fact, this has nothing to do with sex coaching! A sex coach provides "talk therapy" - like any other counselor or therapist. Many sex coaches work with clients by phone, Skype, or other online conferencing services.

A certified sex coach is trained to deal with a wide range of issues relating to sexuality:

Gender identity issues
Sex addiction
Fetishes
Sexual shame
Relationship communication problems
Erectile dysfunction

Most counselors do not have specific training in dealing with sexual topics; they may be uncomfortable talking about these subjects, and may not have the experience to help their clients. That's why sex coaches specialize in sexual topics and issues.

Another different between coaches and therapists is the approach. Therapists often focus on past issues and traumas, and help their clients work through deep-seated emotional problems.

Coaches, on the other hand, are outcome-oriented. They help clients to determine their goals, and put in plan plans to meet those goals. Sex coaches help their clients achieve results in weeks or months, rather than years.

It's surprising how many individuals and couples have sexual issues, and need help.

According to certified sex coach Jennifer Stephan:

"Intimacy and sex are often talked about in hushed tones behind closed doors. They are treated as something shameful and we are usually taught that these things shouldn’t be discussed at all. This leads to misinformation and insecurities."

In many cases, the most important result of sex coaching is increasing your comfort level in discussing your sexual issues with your partner.
