Trump / Counter-Trump

Trump speaks and Pilosi Complains. Trump acts and Clinton dredges up old news. Trump tweets and the world is outraged. Is it possible for Donald Trump to navigate a single day in office without offending someone in the world?

Trump is arrogant and often offensive. But is he doing any good in his office as President? Let’s look at might many may consider as his successes:

  1. The nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Thanks in large part to Mitch McConnell refusing to hold a hearing for Obama’s nominee prior to Trump’s election, Gorsuch now sits on the Supreme Court.

  2. The economy is getting stronger and jobs are up. The economy has added nearly 1.3 million new jobs since the beginning of the year. In May, unemployment was stated at 4.3%. To be fair, in the first half of 2016 a slightly higher number of jobs were created in the U.S. (1.372 million).

  3. There's no question that Trump's election -- and the sense among much of the corporate world that he will be better for them than Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton -- has played a role in the stock market surge. The Dow is up and nearing 23,000—up more than 3,600 points since his election.

  4. Other signs of economic growth come from the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). Some would say the Gross domestic product is the best way to measure a country's economy. GDP is the total value of everything produced by all the people and companies in the country. It doesn't matter if they are citizens or foreign-owned companies. If they are located within the country's boundaries, the government counts their production as GDP. In the first half of 2017, GDP grew at an annual rate of 2.6% in the second quarter; an annual growth of 1.2% in the first quarter of this year.

  5. Border Security. Extrapolating numbers from the first half of this year, it is estimated that enforcement action numbers (preventing illegals from entering the U.S.) will be up by an estimated 100,000 individuals over 2016 and by an estimated 200,000 over 2015 stats.

  6. Militarily his record seems mixed, mostly leaning to bullying and chest-beating. More time is needed to assess what value—if any—he’s bringing on that front.

  7. Health care. Let’s just say he’s trying hard.

Whether you’re a fan or not, if Trump had an opportunity to work with congress for real solutions rather than deal with fall out over every step he takes, there might be a chance he could do our country some good.
