Portage Lakes water lovers will have the chance to make the
lakes a safer, healthier place and win $1000s in prizes at Lake Lovers United:
PLX Clean Up, to be held July 18, 2021.
Organized by The WET Initiative, a non-profit
that promotes clean water and sustainability in recreational waterways, the
event invites residents to take ownership of their community by competing to
pick up trash and litter in the lakes.
Participants may use their own boats or rent
free kayaks and paddle boats, provided by local rental companies Killin' It
Kayaks, Dusty's Landing 2, and West Reservoir Rentals.
Other event sponsors include Pick's, Coldwell
Banker, the Upper Deck, and Pav's Creamery, which will provide an ice cream
boat as part of the clean up.
Clean up teams will launch from specific
locations every 15 minutes from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the competition
ending at 3:00 PM.
All participants will receive a trash claw and
unsinkable bag to facilitate the clean up.
At the end of the event, all bags will be
counted.
Thousands of dollars in prizes from local
businesses, such as Kayaks, Paddleboards, and other cool stuff will be awarded
to the winners
The Wet Initiative doesn’t just want to get the
litter off the top of the lake, they want to get to the bottom of it too.
Divers are also invited to join the Dive to
Thrive Competition sponsored by Lake Affect, where they will be able to take a
deep dive into creating fresher water by picking up sunglasses, bottles, and
other debris from the bottom of the local swim zone.
The diving winner will receive a Grand Prize of
a R.O.L.A. water filtration system for their home, plus 5 years worth of water
filters, sponsored by LakeAffectWater.com. Special prizes will also be awarded
for the top collectors of sunglasses.
An afterparty will take place at Pick's
beginning at 4:00 PM, featuring the Buck Naked Band and chances to win prizes
from White Claw, including hats, koozies, sunglasses, and shirts.
