What to Know About the American Wirehair

The American Wirehair first originated as a naturally occurring genetic mutation? In 1966, a couple living on a farm in Upstate New York-bred their two domestic shorthair cats. What resulted was a little of six kittens. Five of those kittens were shorthair and one was a peculiar wiry coated cat, which became known as the American Wirehair. This breed is one of America’s first naturally occurring mutations to be considered purebred by the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA). The CFA has classified the wirehair as the rarest of the 41 recognized breeds of feline. Even though the breed is mainly known for its coarse, yet soft coat they are quickly becoming famous for their loving personalities as well. In fact, the wirehair is an affectionate and sociable cat that gets along with people of all ages. Contact your veterinarian Wichita, KS to learn more about this unique feline breed.
