The American Wirehair first originated as a naturally
occurring genetic mutation? In 1966, a couple living on a farm in Upstate New
York-bred their two domestic shorthair cats. What resulted was a little of six
kittens. Five of those kittens were shorthair and one was a peculiar wiry
coated cat, which became known as the American Wirehair. This breed is one of
America’s first naturally occurring mutations to be considered purebred by
the Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA). The CFA has classified the wirehair as the
rarest of the 41 recognized breeds of feline. Even though the breed is mainly
